[2002, updated 2020 where noted] Memoirs of a Clinic Defender - this is minimally edited from my own diary and scraps of notes; some weren't dated, so there may be a few errors in the dates, but hopefully it gives an idea of the general trends of what was happening over the decade. 1988 Oct It was late in 1988 when my girlfriend and I saw the poster in Harvard Square. 'Stand Out For Choice', it said. 'Anti-Abortion protesters blockaded a clinic in Brookline last week - we'll form a human chain along Beacon St to protest'. I'd seen the blockades in Atlanta that summer on CNN, but now they were in my town. That pushed way too many of my buttons, and now I had a chance to do something about it. We set out for Brookline, little guessing what we were getting ourselves into. In some ways I'm an outsider in this movement. White, male, straight, from an affluent, academic, semi-WASP background, I'm not a member of any of the oppressed groups. But the script I'd been fed as a kid of traditional attitudes towards women had never made sense to me, and when I was exposed to radical feminism in college a light dawned and I realized I'd found my political home. Although I'd had friends who'd had abortions, and was definitely pro-choice, I hadn't been that aware of it as a specifically political issue until Operation Rescue brought the conflict into the streets of Brookline in '88, soon after I moved to the USA. But I was already committed to opposing the religious right, and it was clear to me that this issue was where the right were pushing. That bright October day, thousands of folks from Greater Boston rallied along Beacon Street in a standout organized by a coalition of pro-choice groups. NOW and NARAL (at that time locally called Mass Choice) were the ones I became aware of on that first day. Sadly, egos and rivalries and different agendas meant that such joint operations were to become rarer over the years, although there are still some good collaborations going on. 1989 Mar We got special 'facilitator' training for the clinic blockades. Facilitators wore armbands; there were typically two coordinators and several legal observers at a clinic, and an overall coordinator for the day. Coordinators knew anyone with an armband was trained and willing to to a variety of tasks. Emphasis on safety, crowd control, and then escorting and full clinic defense - wedges and corridors during blockades. From 1988 to 1990 we would be ready every Saturday morning to head to Brookline and call out the phone tree - several thousand people. It was quite a military operation, with secret phone locations (a union building in Kenmore Sq) so that they couldn't block our line with incoming calls, moles in the anti organization, and a pretty hierarchical organization on defense days with the ability to move troops from one clinic to another quickly. We'd get a thousand people out fairly regularly. The big rallies in Apr and Nov 1989 also built support for us and were really energizing. By late 1989 I graduated to the inner circle of defenders, called upon for special tasks and put in charge of groups of less experienced facilitators. 1988 Nov 26 BLOCKADE at PP. 350 OR hit PP at 6:30am, 600 prochoice. Some later to Repro. [added 2020, from 1991 scrappy note] 1989 early? Blockade in Providence, R.I. A bunch of us drove down from Boston after an early morning call. I got there a little before noon as things were wrapping up. Had lunch with other activists, headed back to Boston. We learnt to keep a full tank of petrol in the car. [added 2020] Feb-Apr 1989, leafleting in Harvard Square recruiting for clinic defense and facilitator training. Also leafleting for April march on Washington. 1989 Apr We take the bus to Washington for the big march. 1989 Apr 29 BLOCKADE. At Preterm 7:30. 250 OR blockade. 1989 May 20 PP, some OR 1989 May 27 Preterm: Christian Action Council, with yellow signs: "Can anything good be said of human abortion?" "Can you picture Jesus performing an abortion?". This bunch seemed to be a little more educated than OR, and less into harrassing patients. 1989 Jun 17 BLOCKADE. OR attacks Hartford. My friend headed out to join the defense, but I was sick and stayed home. 1989 Jul 3 Webster decision announced. Govt Center rally at 6 by NOW. We got a couple of thousand. 1989 Jul 4 Mass Choice rally at State House. No facilitators; socialists organized a sit-down protest in the street, police started arresting. One woman socked the cop in the face, while on TV! 1989 Jul 8. We got the phone tree out to the clinics, but there was no attack. Decided that in future would only call out the tree after an attack started. 1989 Jul 22 BLOCKADE. Preterm at 6.30 am. Facilitators are assigned tasks. For the first time, I'm given some responsibility - I'm assigned five young new recruits and sent to Gynecare clinic. Toni and Beth tell me: "they've only attacked that clinic once, but we'd better have someone there just to look. Let us know if you get into a situation you don't feel comfortable with." So we take the T to Boylston. It's deserted except for cops and barricades; we wait by the side of the door and rehearse scenarios. Then over the rise of Boston Common, like the attacking Apaches in an old Western, come over a hundred antis. The tide of people comes on relentlessly. With naive dedication, the six of us link arms and try and protect a bubble around the door, but the antis crawl under the barricades and past us. We escape and regroup across the street, and I rush to a payphone to call Toni and describe the situation. "I'm not comfortable with this!", a phrase I would take years to live down. Within 20 minutes, a few hundred pro-choicers have arrived at the scene. Later, I'm at Preterm again. More OR have arrived at Preterm, arriving in a U-Haul truck. The staties arrived and started hauling away the OR. One OR locked himself with a Kryptonite to the state police bus. 1989 Jul 29. Small number of OR at PP, larger number at PT, plus CAC. 1989 Oct 14. BLOCKADE. Gynecare blockade. Molly Yard is in town, and comes by to encourage the troops. We take some patients on the T to Preterm, which has agreed to take them. Eventually, there is a path to the door and the police get patients in, but it's taken a lot longer than it should have done. [Note added 2020: at this time we were also recruiting for the November march on Washington, the second one of the year. Hence Yard's visit]. 1989 Dec 2 At Preterm at 7.15; Beth Arnold coordinating. To Repro by T at 8:50 with Angie Deb and Patsy. Three OR at Repro. At 1030 Lisa arrives, and more OR: Mr Holy Water and the Town Crier, plus one new one: late middle age male with brown rim sunglasses. We've given most of the regular antis nicknames by now. By 11 am there are 13 OR. Clare and Patsy escorting. Cops turn up and clear the door area, cop stands in front of doorway. Speedbump arrives 1119. By 1137 there are 17 OR, 8 prochoice. 1989 Dec 9 BLOCKADE. Huge blockade at Repro. We turn up at 6:00am and 20 of us huddle from the cold in the ATM machine lobby next to the clinic, using chemical hand-warmers in our gloves and socks. Before 7 am we notice a couple of familiar OR wandering past, doing a recce. I'm sent to far end of Coolidge Corner for recce. We have a crawler line around the barricades and the police report OR is coming this way. At 7:25 I see the OR coming. They've parked in the lot behind the cinema, and are walking down Beacon St. I race back to the clinic and everyone gets into line formation. Five OR, including Constance Smith, survey the scene, pray, and retreat. Then the full OR attack. The surge of OR covers half of Beacon St, stopping traffic, and blocks the door, but we have people against the wall and pry open a corridor to the door. By 8:00 the OR are 3 deep around our lines. This is one of the most physically confrontational blockades I was at. For hours the OR are pushing against our corridor - at one point I was bent backwards over a barricade and though my spine would snap; at another OR tried crawling between our legs; and at another a big, burly redheaded guy I didn't recognize had an armlock around my neck, the first time I'd been seriously assaulted. One activist, Mary, reacted to a crawler (Steven Darling) by trying to stop him going through her legs by pushing them back with her foot. The anti whined to the cops and she was arrested for assault; the judge threw the case out when it came to court in Apr 1990. Eventually enough of the OR are arrested and the situation returns to normal, but it was thanks to us that patients were able to get in for most of the morning. 1990 Feb 3 Orbiting. At Gynecare 7:20. monitoring; phone in report, all quiet. 0808 2 OR arrive, accost clients. Male in blue wooly hat, female in head scarf and blue coat, both early 30s. 0815 leave, arr PP 0826, arr Preterm 0845. Usual scene. 1990 Feb 27 Clinic defense meeting at NOW. There was a meeting with the cops and clinics where they accused us of escalating the situation. Reevaluate presence prior to OR arrival. Fewer antis now. Previous week, had the usual bunch of antis at PP including Barbara, John, Mr Holy Water etc, 6-7 at Repro, 8-15 OR and 2-7 Chr. Action Coal. at PT, none at the Crit - definitely less than the old days. Have orbiters and a few people at each clinic, someone in office, 20-30 people on call, 3-4 at Coolidge Corner from 7:30 to 8:30. 1990 Mar 10 Repro at 7am, my assigned duty under the new 'monitoring' regime. 1990 May 19: BLOCKADE. 70-80 OR hit Gynecare; Lisa Feldman was orbiting and found them at 7:30. About 40 of us got there. By 8am the cops had 40 OR arrested. A bunch of the OR Kryptonited themselves together but forgot to anchor themselves and were pulled away in a bunch. 1990 May 29: Clinic defense committee meeting, reviewed strategy. In 1990, with the blockades less frequent, it seemed like clinic defense per se was less helpful than it had been. Some activists felt strongly that physically resisting OR was still important, but others decided the situation was now enough under control that a big pro choice presence was unhelpful. I signed up to volunteer at Preterm as a clinic escort. [2020 addition] 1990: Handwritten undated note. '7:00am Posted at corner' (to coordinate activists at that corner of the defensive ring.) '7:30 Hit'. The OR arrive and attempt to swarm our position and block access to the clinic. '8.00 Pushed back against barricades'. The police had previously set up metal barricade fences that we were standing in front of. Being crushed against them by hundreds of antis was scary. '8.30 Corridor opened up'. During the past hour access to the clinic was not possible but eventually we squeezed between the protesters and pushed them apart enough to have a corridor of linked-arm pro-choicers that the clinic escorts could bring a patient through in relative safety. '8.55 Staties arrive'. The Brookline police were, in this period, largely ineffective and often had friendly chats with the OR folks who they apparently went to the same church as. (The police improved a lot in later years). The State troopers were a whole different deal, and arrived in military formation and didn't mess around. '9.00 2 OR in clinic, dragged out'. It was rare for protesters to actually gain access to the clinic interior. '9.00 Big push'. OR tried again to push us aside, but failed. Recall the median size of a male OR thug was much larger than the typical woman college undergrad. It was amazing the line held. '9.20 Leave line to go pee'. I found another facilitator to slip in to my position in the linked-arm chain and replace me. We all got really familiar with the location of all the restroom facilities on Beacon St. 1990 Jun 5. At Preterm, vigil with OR and prochoice marching in a circle. The OR decided not to blockade, but tried to block access by marching in a circle on the sidewalk in front of the door. Apparently as long as you keep moving it's OK. So we joined the circle and when escorts came we stopped walking to open a hole and let them through. 1990 Jul 14: OR blockade? In February 1991 I set off to Alabama for a year. Clinic escorting in Alabama was quite different. No snow, for starters! The clinic in Huntsville was surrounded by a parking lot, and very few patients arrived on foot, so the antis were less effective, just yelling at the patients from a distance. On the other hand, there was none of the community support I'd grown used to in Brookline. The antis were evangelical Protestants instead of Boston's Catholics. The pro-choice activists were a small bunch, enthusiastic but more on the fringe of their local community; the experience of growing up progressive in the right-wing Deep South clearly had affected them. On one occasion, we visited Birmingham and checked out one of the clinics there too. Years later, I would recognize the clinic when its devastated facade made national news in the wake of the bombing that killed Sanderson and maimed Emily Lyons. The beginning of 1992 saw my return to the Boston area, breathing a sigh of relief in the more liberal air of Massachussets. In Oct 1991 a local injunction banning blockades was passed. I resumed escorting at Preterm. 1992 June OR protest outside Gynecare every day for a month. We're out there most days. They stand across the street with signs and fake fetus gravestones. We keep expecting a blockade attack, but it never comes. 1992 Jun 6 First Saturday of the Gynecare blockade. 300 us, 100 of them according to the Globe. 1992 Jun 27 BLOCKADE Reported that 28 antis blockaded WomanCare in Hyannis. 1992 Jun 29 Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision, rally downtown. 1992 Jul 18 OR parked a van in front of Gynecare's entrance. They did in the tires and welded the doors, removed the floor and handcuffed themselves to the axles so it was hard to move away. I didn't see this myself. 1992 Nov 14 BLOCKADE. OR's last gasp, a well advertised blockade attempt - but where would it be? We covered all the bases this time. A few dozen of us were sent to Women's Health, the new clinic on Route 9. The word comes in that OR has landed at the Crittenden House, a clinic on top of a hill in Brighton's Oak Square. We had a few monitors there. We drive over to Oak Square, fortunately I'd done surveillance there before and knew how to get there. There wasn't much of a blockade, less than a hundred OR, but they blocked the street with their cars so patients had to walk up the hill and along the street to get to the clinic. Soon we had a corridor going to the door for the last hundred yards or so. I was assigned to an escort circle, a bubble inside which a patient would be sheltered from the OR, and was leading the circle up the hill when Sean Brogan tried pushing us back down the hill by brute force. Sean is a big, ugly thug and even with a bunch of us pushing back it was hard making progress. Of course the cops weren't around to see this. The antis harrassed us all the way to the corridor. One of the houses on the street opened itself up to the pro-choicers, we were allowed to use their bathroom and were served cookies and juice. 1993 Jul 2-4 National NOW conference in Boston. I co-lead the security team. Election challenge to PI. Bertucci's pesto pizza at Ellen Convisser's as PI campaigns for our votes. A few antis protest outside the Sheraton, but no big trouble. 1993 Sep 11 Escort at PT with Molly, Bob and Cindy. 1993 Sep 17 Data entry at NOW 1993 Oct 9 PT, antis bother scared teen for a long time. 1993 Oct 23 Escorting at PT with Ken, Eric, Bob and Cindy, Walter, Mollie. 1993 Dec 18 PT escorting. 1994 Jan 15 at AAS meeting 1994 Jan 22 Preterm, with Lisa K, Frank. 27 antis. 1994 Feb 26 PT with Lisa, Cindy, Frank, Bob 1994 Mar 26 At PT 1994 Apr 30 At PT, Only 5 OR. 1994 May 7 Anti-racist rally in southie with Jessica, Leigh, Ann, Sheila, Danny, Margo, Jason, Lisa and Frank, Bob Zacher. 1994 May 28 At PT, Lisa and Frank's last escort, Leigh Steele joins. Marion. 1994 Jun 25-26 In NY for Stonewall march 1994 Jul 13 At PT with Cindy, Bob, Marian. 1994 Sep 24 Escorting at PT with Albie Walton, Cindy Fenichel. 1994 Oct 3 Rosie Jimenez march 1994 Oct 15 Monitor Gynecare, 10 OR present. 1994 Oct 22 At PT with Albie, Cindy. 20 OR, no Bill Cotter. While escorting alone out back, I come across a scary looking young man who just stares at me with 'drugged for Jesus' eyes. I greet him and he just glares at me. In retrospect, suspect this was Salvi. I see from my emails just after the shootings that I told people I'd never seen him, but later I remembered seeing this guy. December 30, 1994. I was driving in Cambridge and hear about the shootings on the radio. I pulled over to the side of the road and shook. Then I turned the car around and headed for Brookline. The cops were outside Preterm, the yellow police tape everywhere, broken glass, a car with bulletholes in it, and of course the media. Cop tells me a security guard has been injured; I was afraid it was Albie, turns out it was Rich Seron who I didn't know as well. Phone around, get Ann Sydor from ISO. I went to Coolidge Corner; called NOW, got details of the vigil, handwrote a flyer and went to Copy Cop to xerox it. The Copy Cop gave me a few hundred free extra copies. I spent an hour or so handing out flyers in Coolidge Corner. Then went to the vigil at PP, acting as facilitator. march to the synagogue (5 or 6 pm?). Still a lot of confusion about who had been injured, the media mentioned 'escorts' meaning patient companions. Grab a meal at Bertucci's and go home for not much sleep. Dec 31, 1994 Still in shock and feeling helpless. Had been due to escort at Preterm. Pass there at 7:10 am and drop off flowers. Then orbit: Repro, PP. Nicki Gamble was giving an interview outside PP. Leave flowers next to her. Nothing happening at Gynecare. Back to Repro: see Bill Cotter and media. To Preterm and route 9, then back to Repro, doing surveillance till 9am. Lil and Jeff turn up, escort with them wearing my Preterm escort pinny. The media cameraed me since I was wearing a pinny (showed up on CNN later). Salvi was still on the loose so we were really on our toes, expecting to be shot at any moment. Bill Cotter was there protesting, I challenged him to condemn the murders. All he would say was, 'what about the murders in here today?'. Cheryl the midget, Mr Holy Water and Mr Video were also there. Gave interviews to Phoenix, Channel 4, CBS, Mobile Tribune (guy flew up from Alabama). Distribute hand made leaflets for next rally, then Toni and Margo drop by with real ones. We organized a rally downtown at the State House, a tough thing on First Night. As facilitator, kept corridor clear for First Night goers. Very emotional.
