Built 1944 as FS-278, converted to MSTS T-AG-161 in 1960, and then to T-AGM-2/USNS Range Recoverer in Nov 1960.
Note: A Feb 1966 mid-Atlantic Arcas launch was reported by the IRIG
Meteorological Working Group (Document 109-62, Vol LIV, Feb 1966
Firings) as being from `Ship Sierra'. This might be the USS Sierra, but
there's no other indication it was ever involved in weather rocket
firings. It seems more likely that `Sierra' is just a code letter S in
the phonetic alphabet (perhaps as Quebec and Victor were associated with
the range ships Coastal Sentry and Rose Knot). I further speculate that
the firing was a proof of concept precursor to the Zorba eclipse
firings, and that Ship Sierra was in fact the Range Recoverer; obviously
this is a rather tenuous guess.
