In this image, we look back to when our universe was much younger and more violent. Each pinprick of color represents a supermassive black hole - some several billion times more massive than our Sun. Not even light can escape the clutches of a black hole, but the material around its edges heats up and emits strong X-rays, alerting us to the black hole's presence.

  • Distance from Earth: 6 to 11 billion light years
  • Size: 300 million light years
