Distant galaxies tell us about the early formation and evolution of the universe.

At the center of most galaxies is a supermassive black hole - a dense object millions to billions of times heavier than our own Sun. Some of these black holes shoot out huge amounts ot energy and superfast jets of matter; they are known as quasars.
