Note: The letters are those used in byte 8 of the SatType code in the GCAT satellite catalog entries.
- Sats: Total number of satellites launched.
- (F) Early deorbit: satellites which have reentered; determined to be malfunctioning before reaching operational orbit (or above 400 km), and abandoned or actively lowered prior to reentry.
- (R) Disposal, later semicontrolled reentry: satellites which reached the operational orbit (or at least 400 km, if deployed below that) but whose orbits were later lowered to cause early reentry. These satellites retained propulsive capability but either failed in some other respect or were deliberately retired.
- (M) Reentry after fail; Later uncontrolled reentry: Reentered after an extended period of uncontrolled orbital decay; presumed failed.
- Total still in orbit: Total of satellites which reached orbit and have not yet reentered, whether working or not.
- (F) Screened: Satellites not working correctly and left in low orbit prior to completing orbit raising; expected to reenter soon.
- (M) Failed, uncontrolled decay: Satellites stopped stationkeeping after reaching operational orbit; no manuevers occurring, presumed failed.
- Total still working: Total of satellites still in orbit minus those thought failed (screened or uncontrolled decay).
- (R) Disposal: orbit lowering to semicontrolled reentry underway
- (L) Out of con(stellation): Satellites which were operational but have been removed from the operational shell; still actively maneuvering.
- (U) Anomalous: Satellites lowered to an intermediate orbit height but stationkeeping. I suspect these satellites are not fully operational, but not yet abandoned - perhaps SpaceX hopes to debug their problems.
- (T) Reserve?: Satellites maintained in an orbit close to the operational one. Suspected to be operational reserve. Also includes satellites which remain stationkeeping in the old 550 km orbit rather than having moved to the new 547 km one.
- (S) Special: Satellites making unusual manuevers, suspected to be being used for special tests.
- (D) Drift: Satellites maintained at an intermediate altitude undergoing targeted orbital plane drift.
- (A) Ascent: Satellites currently orbit raising towards operational altitude
- (O) Operational: Satellites in one of the operational shells. As of Aug 2022 the main shell, Group 1, is (547.25 km, 53 deg). There are 141 satellites on their way to a polar shell (523 km, 97.5 deg) and 49 satellites operating in the Group 2 shell at (577 km, 70.0 deg). Note that I am only talking about the orbital status here - satellites that are not in the `operational orbit' may nevertheless be providing operational service.
